The Directorate is mandated with overseeing the implementation and promotion of Community Service orders as one of the ways to reduce prison population. The Directorate is mandated with overseeing the implementation and promotion of Community Service orders as one of the ways to reduce prison population.

During the reporting period, the Directorate of Community Service was able to manage 10,107 Community Service orders issued by various courts across the country relieving Uganda Prison Service the burden of maintaining these offenders cognizant of the limited resources.

 

It is imperative to mention that the Ministry of Internal Affairs and generally the Directorate of Community Service in particular, has embraced restorative approach to offender rehabilitation and reintegration. The approach under taken by DCS facilitates offender learning, skills building and community participation thereby fostering law and order, peace and internal security which are the core objectives of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

The report depicts how our services can make a difference to the lives of offenders through skills matching, building and reintegration into the community through social connection, skills empowerment and meaningful relationships. In an effort to develop coordinated solutions to justice related issues, we have worked closely with other stakeholders throughout the year. The home visits and reconciliation initiatives are a result of such collaboration with stakeholders using a multi-agency approach in dealing with family issues that can reduce crime in our community.
